Politically Incorrect

The other day my husband and I were listening to the radio and Sarah Palin was speeching and she ended with "I'm proud to be an American." We both looked at each other and asked almost in unison, "what does that even mean?"

I know what I'm proud of, as far as being American, but what is Sarah Palin proud of?

We tried to come up with some answers, but this is all we could think of:

the far-reaching self-serving government
the state of the economy
the national debt
the pompus, arrogant attitude toward world issues
rampant consumerism
epidemic obesity
the glamourization (sp?) of Hollywood
reality TV
being the #1 polluter on the planet
the welfare system

Then, Mitt Romney was speaking in Utah and said, "This is an exceptional land. A land we can stand to be proud of."

I agree with him that this is a "land" to be proud of. But, speaking collectively and not individually, the "people" I am not so sure about.

Then, I watched Slumdog Millionaire this week and realized how grateful I am to live in this country, in whatever condition it's in. There's nowhere else I'd rather be.

So, I'm sorry about this politically incorrect post.

I had a similar thought at Women's Conference this week. During one of the sessions they were talking about the Church's welfare system and all of the wonderful programs the Church sponsors. They showed videos of the people who were being helped. Many of them were people in third world countries who have absolutely nothing. They have to walk miles and miles just to get water that may be contaminated with all manner of diseases, they don't have prenatal care so hundreds of thousands of babies die just because the doctors don't know how to resuscitate them. I am so thankful to live in a country where I don't have to worry about these things. I feel very blessed and humbled to be a citizen of the United States and to be born into the Lord's true church!

I kind of look at our nation like a rebel child. It has its flaws, mistakes and spiraling downward behaviors.. but there is a entire person to take into account.
The person you rocked as a baby, the person that wrote you little I love you notes as a 7 year old...etc etc.

I really believe our nation is more than it's mistakes, shortcomings and flaws. It is what it was and what it CAN become. Standing by our nation in belief of it's potential, is pride to me. There is SO much good, opportunity and comparatively there is peace! If you haven't yet, watch The Devil Came on Horseback. And look at our nations reaction to these epidemics and problems? People are taking a stand, people are trying to change the path and improve the weaknesses. Any large system is going to have weak points, corruption and problems. But there are a great many people trying to do good and do better.

Here is some pride if you need a little more:

Oh goodness, I worded that funny! esp the part: "If you haven't yet, watch The Devil Came on Horseback.
and look at our nations reaction to these epidemics and problems" they were meant to be two disconnected thoughts, bad wording made them sound connected - oh well. Hopefully you got the idea.
